There’s a good chance I’ll be heading into the woods for a few days this fall with my brother. When I lived in Maine he came to visit and we canoed 4 days in the Grand Lake Stream region. It was wonderful. We saw more moose (5) than people (2). Being able to explore these remote areas is a profound experience, especially with the people I am closest to.
As we begin to transition to a new season, my mind begins to transition. Lately I have been thinking a lot about old work, new work, direction, and how they are all connected.
I first became familiar with the work of Dan Winters upon seeing a photograph of his on the cover of the New York Times Magazine. Since then I have always admired the strength, beauty, and originality displayed in his photography. After hearing him speak I can say that I have an even greater appreciation for him now.
“People aren’t going to remember the things you do. They’re going to remember how you made people feel and I’ve always really tried to adhere to that. I try to be kind and gracious, and appreciative,” says Dan.
Last night I returned from a great week seeing friends in the Adirondacks. I had no cell phone or internet; it was welcomed and peaceful.
I am elated to be 1 of 3 selected winners for Joerg Colberg’s Conscienttious Portfolio Competition 2009 from an applicant pool of over 575 submitted portfolios. Joerg will introduce, interview, and publish Lydia Panas, Bradley Peters, and myself during the coming weeks. I applied with my “Alebtong, Uganda, 2009″ series. Stay tuned for all the details.
I’m hitting the road to see friends and make work. I’ll first be in Inlet seeing college friends and then I’ll be a little North of Speculator seeing two friends who recently finished an 11,000 mile bicycle ride around the United States while creating a fresh, insightful, unique project.
Absolut’s “Doing Things Differently Leads to Something Exceptional” is by far one of the most visual, creative, and stunning commercials I have seen this year.
Although I am not overly familiar with Stefan Sagmeister’s “Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far”, a few criticisms of the commercial believe it draws too much inspiration from his work, but I do not. It is superbly and methodically crafted from start to finish. The end product is clean, simple, easy to understand, and forever memorable. When I watch this commercial I feel like I am reading an enthralling short story where all I want to do is keep turning the page to see what’s next. This is what advertising is all about.
The film was created by TBWA\Chiat\Day, directed by acclaimed director Rupert Sanders and designed by production designer James Chinlund.
Press release: “ABSOLUT has always chartered its own routes and done things differently to create a superior vodka and outstanding marketing. With ‘Anthem’ we want to put a stake in the ground and show the ambition of our future communication”, says Anna Malmhake, Global Brand Director at The Absolut Company. “This film gives an artistic nod to our deep creative roots, but more importantly, it delivers a significant promise for the future. ‘Anthem’ conveys our most fundamental brand belief and states that ABSOLUT has a long-term commitment to creativity.””
